What is the Avant-Garde?
The Avant-Garde is a group of vibrant Frist Center members who focus on the mission of ensuring that the Frist Center remains the premier community visual arts center in Nashville.
This group engages members in social and educational events throughout the year, such as:
- private receptions
- networking opportunities
- educational events
The Avant-Garde is the perfect way to meet new people, network with business associates, join friends, and expand your appreciation of the arts.
As an Avant-Garde member you will develop an insider’s appreciation for the variety of exhibitions the Frist Center offers, enjoy invitations to social and educational events, and have the unique opportunity to mix and mingle with other members who share a passion for the visual arts and are committed to supporting the Frist Center.

Avant-Garde membership is now an add-on to any level of membership. All Frist Center members may join the Avant-Garde by adding a $50 program fee to their membership renewal.
Opening the Avant-Garde to all members creates a wider audience, builds Avant-Garde membership, and provides more opportunities for social interaction and networking.

Gallery Talk with Musical Accompaniment
“Thomas Hart Benton and The Sounds of Americana”
Thursday, January 14 • 7:00 p.m. • Ingram Gallery
Join Robert Webb Fry II, Sr., lecturer of music history and literature at the Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, as he addresses Thomas Hart Benton’s use of American folk music as a thematic element in many of his works. Accompanied by Ben Sanders on fiddle, Fry will discuss the sights and sounds of Benton’s America through a selection of images and songs. Afterwards, join us for music and drinks in the Grand Lobby.

Films at the Frist
“300”
Thursday, March 12 • 7:00 p.m. • Frist Center Auditorium
Avant-Garde members will enjoy reserved seating for this American action film based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel by the same title. Through larger-than-life scenes, 300 depicts the heroic and borderline impetuous Spartan Army and their struggle to preserve freedom and democracy. This film is part of a series of four films designed, in conjunction with the Heroes exhibition, to examine what it means to be a hero. Directed by Zack Snyder, 2007. 117 minutes. 35mm. Rated R.

Guest Lecture
“Luis Ferré’s Sensibility: The Healing Core of the Ponce Museum”
Thursday, April 8 • 6:30 p.m. • Frist Center Auditorium
Join Benigno Trigo, Ph.D., grandson of Luis Ferré, for a discussion on the transformative effects of art. Dr. Trigo will focus on the ideas that motivated his grandfather to found the Museo de Arte de Ponce, its placement in the Puerto Rican community, and the different iterations of the institution’s existence. Insights into Luis Ferré’s choices for the artwork he purchased for the museum will also be shared. Afterwards, join fellow Avant-Garde members and Frist Center educators in a private discussion on the placement of the Frist Center in the Nashville community.
